The
Heat Is On
Lester Lee/Ned Washington
Okay: Hands up. I don't know of anyone who will argue that "Miss Sadie Thompson" is Noir. Even I don't pretend that it is (though filmed differently it easily could have been) but I do argue that the titular heroine is a Grade A. Deadlier-Than-The-Male, fitting those credentials like a Jean Louis gown. "A day-old hothouse corsage not quite faded enough to be tossed away," dismisses critic Gene Ringgold sniffily. Accurate, perhaps, but not terribly chivalrous. Besides, "The Heat Is On" is a great number and I wanted to do it - and where there is a will, there's an academic argument....
